The ailao, a warrior's display

Long before any fire was involved, Samoan Toa warriors performed the ailao: a flashy, skilled demonstration of twirling, throwing and catching a nifo oti, a carved, serrated-edged war club, with roots historians trace to roughly 900–1200 AD.

Tavita Vaoifi's revival

In the 1940s, performer Tavita Vaoifi researched the old accounts of the ailao and reworked the display into the Siva Afi, lighting the ends of the club and performing it nightly at clubs across the United States before taking the form back to Samoa.

From blade to pole

As the dance moved from ceremonial display to nightly stage performance, the implement changed with it: the wooden handle grew longer and the blade shorter, and most performers today use wooden or aluminium poles wrapped in towels rather than an edged club.

A Pacific-wide finale

Fire knife dancing spread from Samoa to Hawaiʻi, Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands through family and cultural ties, and has become close to a standard closing act for a Polynesian luau show.

Closing the night at Gilligan's

At Gilligan's, the fire-knife performance comes last, after the show has already crossed from Hawaiʻi to New Zealand to Tahiti — a Samoan finale to an evening built from several Pacific traditions.

Watching from a small room

Because the room is small, the fire-knife finale plays out close to the tables rather than on a distant stage — one reason reviewers single it out as the evening's high point.
